Australia's captain Expected to Feature a Major Role in Iconic Rivalry

Pat Cummins bowling

Pat Cummins has taken 309 wickets in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.

Australia's chair of selectors the selector has confirmed that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming England-Australia contest.

Speculation had been growing that Cummins might sit out due to a persistent back stress problem that was still troubling him.

Earlier indications from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest kicking off on the 21st of November in Perth.

The selector shared that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about the likelihood of taking part.

"We're aware that the window is narrowing and various factors at play, not only his injury, but other factors as well," he commented.

"It's positive. We firmly believe that he's going to play a significant role. Hopefully starting in Perth. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."

Past Concerns

The captain missed the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals in the previous weeks after scans revealed a lower back issue.

There is a track record of back injuries, with flare-ups in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 leading to absences from several home seasons in a short span.

Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his rehabilitation process to secure his spot for the Ashes.

Bailey noted that he did not know if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the first Test.

Contingency Plans

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was excluded lately from the national team for their limited-overs matches against India as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.

The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that Green will play in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "ideally positioned to resume bowling."

"We put so much time has gone into building out the plan for him to take part for the opening match as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the initial matches in any case. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for a short period, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
