Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was required to halt operations for several hours when numerous of them drifted across the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights disrupting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's main urban center and near the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Regional Consequences
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why smugglers utilize a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that such operations become unprofitable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
